Roberto Giorgi named IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor, Class of 2026

Wednesday, October 7, 2026

Roberto Giorgi, Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Siena, has been named to the 2026 Class of Distinguished Contributors of the IEEE Computer Society.

The IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor Recognition Program honors members who have made significant and sustained technical contributions to computing, the Computer Society, and the broader computing profession and community. Recognition is highly selective: the number of members admitted through the annual evaluation process is limited to 0.5% of the total IEEE Computer Society membership.

Candidates are evaluated on a documented record of contributions spanning areas such as scientific publications and conference papers, keynote presentations, standards and technical working groups, tutorials and training activities, patents and software or engineering contributions, as well as service to the professional community. Applicants must also satisfy substantial IEEE Computer Society membership and contribution requirements.

Giorgi’s scientific activity spans more than thirty years in the fields of computer architecture and parallel and high-performance computing, with contributions ranging from multithreaded and dataflow architectures to many-core systems, cache coherence, reconfigurable computing, and, more recently, RISC-V and FPGA-based platforms. Author or co-author of more than 160 scientific publications, he has coordinated major European research projects such as TERAFLUX, focused on architectures for highly parallel computing, and AXIOM, dedicated to heterogeneous and reconfigurable platforms for cyber-physical systems. His work also includes sustained service to the international scientific community through IEEE, ACM, and HiPEAC, together with activities in technology transfer, education, and the development of innovative tools for research and teaching in computer architecture.

The IEEE Computer Society has included Giorgi among the members of its 2026 Distinguished Contributor Class, together with an international group of researchers and professionals in computing.

The designation is permanent and complements the IEEE membership grades by specifically recognizing sustained technical and professional contributions to the computing field.
