The recent research activity of this group has dealt with terrestrial and satellite wireless systems (3G, 4G, WiFi, WiMAX, DVB-S2, etc.) in the framework of the following projects: EU FP7 RADICAL, ESA SatNEx III, COST WiNeMo Action, and EU FP7 RESPONSIBILITY. Mobile broadband communications have a steady growth and diffusion and new services entail higher traffic loads. Since 2011 mobile Internet subscriptions have exceeded the broadband wired ones and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Hence, this research activity has dealt with the efficient use of the frequency bands in order to improve the quality of service provided to users. Innovative solutions have been studied to manage multimedia traffic flows for novel Terabit satellites using Q/V/W frequency bands that are subject to strong impairments due to atmospheric events. Moreover, novel inter-cell cell interference coordination mechanisms have been proposed for LTE-A that allow improving the Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) capacity of 20% - 30% without increasing system costs. Finally, network security issues have been investigated for the management of medical data in e-health applications.
